Buy Her A Sexy Valentine’s Day Gift

Amy Friedman has a tip for guys for Valentine's Day. The best place to find out what size and style underwear a wife or girlfriend wears is not her lingerie drawer. It's her laundry basket.


The drawer may house beloved relics that no longer fit or never were comfortable, she said. But the laundry doesn't lie: "That's what she's wearing," said Friedman.


Friedman, the store buyer and manager, represents a third generation in the Memphis lingerie business. Her grandmother, Bertel Herz, 103, opened the former Trousseau in 1949 and ran it most years until the family closed it in 2003.

Her daughter, Eden Friedman, and granddaughters, Amy Friedman and Pesha Izenberg, opened Trousseau II, now at 408 Perkins Ext., in 1999 because they wanted to sell more contemporary styles of upscale lingerie to a younger clientele.


Men are better at knowing sizes than they once were, she said. But many will still wait until the day before Valentine's Day to shop. They resist spending more than $100, and they still prefer to buy something red or black, which is apparently OK.


Seldom do women return a garment because of colour. One woman who did complained she couldn't sleep in the colour. "It was turquoise," said Friedman. "It was beautiful. And the lights are out. How can it keep someone awake?"


Men have their peculiarities, too. Occasionally a male shopper can't tell her what his wife usually wears to bed. One could imagine several explanations for this, none of them good.


Fortunately, "there's been a huge move in the lingerie world to things that are sexy and pretty but also comfortable," said Friedman, so women and men can find something they both like.


Some of the most popular Valentine's Day gift items are sleepwear, such as a chemise, a camisole and tap pants set or contemporary pajamas that are cute and sexy.


Hugely popular with women shopping for themselves are soft, colourful, stretch-lace low-rise thongs or boy shorts by Hanky Panky. "They're comfortable. And they're like jelly beans," she said. "It's nice to see all the colours in your closet."


Pairing the panties with a Hanky Panky lace cami makes a great gift for about $75. Or you can buy satin tap pants and cami sets for around $50.


Older men may as well forget the word "teddy." The sexy, one-piece, body-suit like garments are much less popular now because they are too cumbersome for women to get on and off.


Friedman also carries few slips. "It seems to be a generational thing," she said. Younger women seldom wear them perhaps because they wear fewer dresses and because more garments are lined.


But the lovely look of a lace slip is still alive in the chemise nightie, such as those from Eberjey in very soft lace and jersey knit for around $75. Or the same look is available in cami and boy short sets for about $105.


Wendy Glez offers soft jersey knit pajamas sometimes with spaghetti-strap tops or lace-trimmed pants for around $140.
Of course, traditional bra and panty sets usually make welcome gifts.

Aubade, a French company, offers luxurious bras prized for the quality of their lace and priced around $105 to $115. But, if that's too much, you can get very pretty ones by Elle MacPherson for $60 to $70 that are a good value, Friedman said.


Some women manage the underwear gift issue rather cleverly, said Friedman, by buying their own luxury intimate apparel to wear as a present for their husbands or significant others on Valentine's Day. "Those never come back," she said. "Typically a guy is very happy to see a woman in front of him in lingerie."
